06/28/07 - 07/28/17

We miss our beautiful doxie Duke, who contracted an autoimmune disease which caused his body to attack and destroy his blood platelets (there is no known cause for this disease). We took him to UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Athens, GA, on July 24, where he stayed until he crossed the rainbow bridge on July 28. The staff there did all they could for him, but he was bleeding internally and becoming more and more swollen; they gave him IV transfusions of medication which were supposed to cause production of platelets, but it never did for him. We made the heartwrenching decision on July 27 that he needed to be out of his suffering since he was getting worse by the hour. We were there as he crossed the rainbow bridge, holding his paw and looking into his eyes until he could no longer see us.

I can't describe how much we miss him or how difficult it has been for our family.

He is now at peace, buried beside our granddawg Shadow. Run free, sweet boy. We will always love you.

Why We Love Dogs

Papa Duke, (my late father), one of the beloved Southern characters in THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES series of books, so aptly states our feelings about dogs in I AM SARGE, Book 1:

He was my inspiration for Sarge the doxie of THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES books, and many of the experiences in those books really happened. He was a very special doxie and very intelligent. Our grandchildren never knew life without him, because he was their older fur brother.

Shadow had turned 16 in January 2017, and had been in declining health for some time.


Dachshunds . . . you gotta love 'em, even when they're no longer with us.

Heartfelt Christian Fiction:

From My Heart to Yours

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things." --Philippians 4:8

The dictionary defines heartfelt as "deeply or sincerely felt." Synonyms include:

  • cordial
  • real
  • earnest
  • bona fide
  • unfeigned
  • unmannered
  • unaffected

In general, writers of Christian fiction already write about things that are heartfelt, so I am not unique in coining this label--but such writing is far more than mere entertainment.

Hopefully, readers will enjoy my writing, but will also come away with something they can take with them long after reading Sarge's tales. People who matter to me, ideas of eternal consequence, and God's unconditional love--are all part of the mix:

  • People who matter to me - At this point in my writing career, my friends and family are people I know best, so writing about them is a joy.

  • Ideas of eternal consequence - It is my hope that my books will point readers to the eternal truths found in the Bible.

  • God's unconditional love - This golden thread is woven throughout the tapestry of Sarge's tales. 

For readers who will read (or have already read) my books, my heartfelt prayer is for you to be uplifted and inspired by them.
